I should preface the following by saying, I don't know shit about art. Seriously, I'm an art moron. I've always enjoyed my visits to the Getty, but that museum is filled with classics. Who doesn't love Irises? However, when it comes to modern art; cool, new art; kickass pop-culture inspired art that I don't even begin to understand, I'm a dumbass.
In spite of that, I'm really excited to see the opening of Rubikcubism at SIXSPACE on June 11.
From the Sixspace website:
"Rubikcubism: Avant garde artistic movement that appeared in the XXI Century by using Rubik's cubes as a medium to create art. The French artist known by the pseudonym Invader is at the origin of this movement."
Yeah, you read that right. Rubik's Cubes as art. "Invader" does some pretty cool shit with cubes. Go look at Sean Bonner's Flickr photos to see some behind the scenes shots.
My favorite is definitely the Mario.
In addition to the cubeart, Invader has also affixed mosaic "Space Invaders" to locations all over the world, including the Hollywood sign. His "Alias" series (not to be confused with the TV show that recently featured zombies. btw, wtf?) will feature exact clones of the street versions. Like this one:
It's going to be a pretty cool art show, if you're into that kind of thing. Even if you're not (and I'm usually not), I think it seems like a pretty special exhibition. Check it out:
It runs from June 11-July 9, 2005 @

Art is what ever floats your boat. One could argue if it takes skill, talent, thinking out of the box, thinking in the box with pizzaz, etc., it's art. If it makes you feel something, no matter what, I think it's art. This art makes me feel like bopping my head and wondering why I didn't think of it, but, most importantly, enjoying it. thanks for sharing something that otherwise I might never have seen.

This reminds me of this prank: http://www.cs-club.org/~dheppens/pics/DSC01854.jpg that some stundents at my school (and good friends of mine)pulled -
It's five packages of post-it notes to make up a larger-than-life size Super Mario and a Goomba.

I had a Rubik's cube and always sucked at it. All the "smart kids" in my school had them, and I was the reject who just never mastered it. The year the cube was hot, my mom and I went to Germany to visit my brother, and I brought the damn thing with me.
At one point, we were introduced to an elderly woman, Gretl, and her severely mentally handicapped/legally blind son, Hansi. (Gretl had physically protected Hansi from Nazis in WWII who had placed him on a list for euthanasia - actually held guys off with a pitchfork - one tough lady!) Despite his limited vision, Hansi must have seen some of the bright color off the cube and picked it up off the coffeetable. He took off his inch-thick glasses, held it directly up to his eyes, and studied it intently for what had to have been an hour. Then, he started working it with lightening speed.
In just a couple of minutes, he had it solved. We all just stared at him, utterly amazed, and he laughed the biggest belly laugh I've ever heard.
It was pretty wild.

How on earth did he get a space invader on The Hollywood Sign? Inquiring minds want to know!

So this isn't a rubik's comment but I noticed that you/cameron are suing those bastards at the National Enquirer http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Movies/06/03/diaz.sue.ap/index.html
Just wanted to say "Go Shane, kick their ass!"

I've been keeping up with this art show for a couple of weeks now through Sean B. on http://blogging.la and I think it's quite awesome. Too bad I am out of town through August. Meh. Enjoy it!
And freaking awesome news about the lawsuit. I'm sending positive thoughts your way...

Im sure they simply remove the little squares and re-position them in such a way as to make a silly picture..Art, eh ?
Posted by: throw | 06/03/2005 at 07:27 PM
throw - no, not at all. each one is drawn out by hand and then manipulated to create the image. no repositioning of the tiles at all.

It's cute stuff but I'd hardly qualify it as art.

Cool thing.

I *so* wish I'd seen this sooner. I've only been checking in on your blog now and then, but your summer afternoons post has won me over. I've been visting LA for 10 days now, but I fly out today...Shoot, this would have been a kick in the pants!
(I was wondering what that frag/defrag thing was you almost knocked over in the X-vlog.)

I love this modern day mosaic art design.
You're right it is new modern mosaic tile art.
